The Water Truck goes way back to the mining sites but has improved immensely over the years

Water trucks are commonly used in mining applications & construction sites such as road works, primarily for dust control solutions. A Water truck usually consist of a series of spray nozzles equipped with an engine to pump and spray water to control dust on dry or windy days, to hydrate mines when they become dry and to remove overburden on mining sites. A water truck is different from a typical truck in that it must be able to contain a large volume of water. This requires special tank specifications, frame and mountings to hold the tank and include spray nozzles and associated equipment.

However before dust control legislation around roadwork construction sites and before the development of modernized mechanics, watering systems were devised in other ways in and around mining sites. A hydraulic monitor equipped with large nozzles would spray heavy quantities of water in a constant stream against rocky hillsides in order to remove the overburden covering the sought-after minerals in an open-pit mine. This was the extent of using water in and around mining sites.

The monitor was made up of a single nozzle at the end of the line. Water was syphined from the mountain rivers and any nearby resource and dumped into the hydraulic monitor. It would then travel in restricted amounts through small pipes and would be relayed in a steady stream. The hydraulic monitor was hugely successful as the outflow of water  blasted onto the side of the open pit mine exposed small amounts of gold after turning a hillside into a slew of mud. When the dirt from the overburden was removed, a series of sluice boxes were used to collect the gold. A very labour intensive exercise after the water blasting not too mention the mub pool created by the water off the hillside. A problem that arose with the hydraulic monitor was the viscous mud it produced as a result of the water stream. The soil and water mixture often polluted waterways and roadways. There was no way of containing this mud in those days

The use of hydraulic monitoring eventually became illegal in 1884 in California but continued in other states until the 1940s.

Today the water truck has come a long way. This is due to a number of developments such as improved truck mechanics, better tyres & traction, simpler & cleaner engines and technologically improved materials for water cartage tanks. Water Carts Direct have choosen polyethylene tanks to mount on their water trucks and have even taken the hard work out of driving them by offering automatic transmissions in their water trucks, both for hire and sale.
